What is Peer Mediation?

Peer mediation is a conflict resolution strategy where students help their peers solve problems with the assistance of a neutral third party, called a mediator. The mediator creates a supportive environment where the students involved in the conflict can listen to each other, understand the underlying issues, and work together to find a mutually agreeable solution. Unlike traditional disciplinary actions, mediation is voluntary and empowers students to take responsibility for resolving their conflicts, making them more likely to follow through with the agreement. Peer mediation can address issues like jealousy, rumors, bullying, and misunderstandings, and can even help resolve conflicts between students and teachers. This approach is widely used in schools because it allows students to connect with each other in ways adults cannot, fostering a positive and collaborative school environment.
